Trikuti comes from Sanskrit and, literally translated, means confluence of three, such as a place where three rivers meet and merge. There are many spiritual interpretations of this term; it is used in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib to describe the three qualities of maya (satva, tamas, and rajas), and has also been used to describe the three parts of the nervous system, as well as the three major energy channels of the body, ida, pingali, and shushumna nadi. The divine is frequently described as having three parts, and yogically the word is sometimes used to refer to the union of the heavens, underworld, and Earth in human form or experience.
