Before You Begin
Among the many types of meditation available to us in Modern Kundalini Yoga, Venus Kriyas are very unique and designed for couples to do together. While the word kriya means completed action, the word venus refers to the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Like all kriyas, they involve postures or asana, hand positions or mudra, mantra, meditation, breathing or pranayama in some combination, but in Venus Kriya these are all employed to generate a strong shared electromagnetic field for the couple. When they are practiced carefully and consciously, positive energy is created and directed to subconsciously cleanse, raise the vibration of the relationship, and lift the shared consciousness of the couple up through the chakras to the divine.
Though Venus Kriyas may resemble White Tantric Yoga at first glance, they are not the same and can be practiced without the support of the group energy or the Mahan Tantric. Venus Kriyas are, however, considered to be an advanced and powerful practice, because they amplify energy by circulating it through the polarity of the couple. Because Venus Kriyas are not White Tantric Yoga, when they are taught in group settings the couples should not line up or sit in rows to share energy diagonally; this energy is shared only between the two partners practicing together. One Venus Kriya can be taught in a yoga class along with a regular kriya, but Venus Kriyas should not make up an entire class or workshop.
Because these kriyas are so powerful, it is recommended that they only be practiced by those with some Kundalini Yoga experience. The point of this practice is to elevate the sexual and sensual energy of the partnership to build the capacity to see the divine in each other; Venus Kriyas must never be used in an attempt to seduce or control someone. To avoid confusion, it is ideal to practice Venus Kriyas in established partnerships, instead of with acquaintances or just assigned pairs in classes.
In order to safely and effectively practice Venus Kriyas, follow these guidelines:

- Prepare well to get the maximum benefits. You may want to practice a Kundalini Yoga kriya, meditation, or chanting together, before beginning a Venus Kriya. You may also want to create a quiet, inspiring, and relaxed atmosphere for practice.
- Tune in. Sit down opposite one another and bring your hands into Prayer Pose. Chant the Adi Mantra three times and then the Mangala Charn Mantra three times together.
- Recognize Source in your partner. With your hands still in Prayer Pose, look into your partner’s eyes. Bow your head in recognition of the God consciousness in them.
- Project love and divine light to your partner. As you look into each other’s eyes, project higher love and light to each other. For example, you might silently say something like “You are divine.” or “I honor you.” You can make up a mantra or positive affirmation or simply send loving thoughts to your partner. This opens both of your hearts to let real love flow.
- Do the Venus Kriya. Set a timer for 3 minutes and follow the instructions for the Venus Kriya that you’ve chosen to practice.
- Thank your partner. When you finish, stretch up and twist from side to side. Then bring your hands together in Prayer Pose and say “Thank you. Sat Nam.” to your partner. Bow deeply again in recognition of the divine in them.
- Relaxation and optional massage. Massage each other if you both feel like it, and then relax completely.
There are more Venus Kriyas than we can list here, and Arete has published many, including some that have rarely been published before.
