Woman in meditative practice

Congratulations on deciding to start a personal meditation or yogic practice at home! Maybe you’ve read about the benefits of yoga, know someone who practices, or feel the need for a change and want to explore yoga or meditation as an option. Whatever your reasons, this article will help you get started.

Having a daily habit to connect is one of the greatest gifts that you can give yourself. Just like we have hygiene routines that help us keep our body clean (brushing your teeth, taking a shower etc.), it is essential to have a habit to sit down, connect deeply with yourself, and  physically, mentally, energetically, and spiritually. Just that simple act every day can produce major changes in your life.

Starting a yoga/meditative practice at home is easier than you might think. All you need is a quiet space, a chair (or even the floor and a pillow), and you can begin right now.

This is only a guide on how to create this sacred space and time for yourself, and all of the ideas in this article are just suggestions. You are encouraged to experiment with the various elements, keep what is inspiring, and discard those things that do not resonate with you.

Step 1: Setting a purpose and/or intention

The first step is to set a clear intention. Having clarity on your “why” is fundamental to help you establish a daily habit of stepping into this space. Some questions that you might ask yourself are:

  • Why do I want to start a meditative/yoga practice?
  • What specific benefits am I hoping to gain from this practice?
  • What aspects of my life do I want to improve or address through practice?

You may find it very helpful to write your intention/purpose down. Remember, this intention might change over time, and new reasons will emerge or grow.
