Bandhas: Energy Locks Explained

Share this article:

"The bandhas are the keys to energy and vitality, a way to awaken the inner power that resides in all of us."

Imagine harnessing the internal energy within your body, channeling it, and directing it with the power of your intention. This is the essence of Bandhas, where squeezing or locking specific groups of muscles can lead to profound shifts in your physical body and your awareness. Yoga teaches us that the practice of Bandhas helps you self-regulate energy and direct your awareness.

What are Bandhas?

Yogis understood that there are three zones in the body where muscle groups lie  perpendicular to the spine or horizontally.

These zones are:

  • Pelvic floor
  • Diaphragm area
  • Neck area (below the jaw)

These three zones are also areas where the consciousness or Kundalini, builds up energetically, similar to the way in which water builds up behind a dam. Feeling your own internal energy flow, especially in these areas where it concentrates, awakens different facets of your awareness. You will then be better prepared to manage your energy and well-being. The practice of bandhas can help you connect to the internal resources and vitality that enable you to be creative, positive, and strong, to face the challenges in your life.

These zones are traditionally referred to as "knots" and are linked with particular chakras. For the Kundalini energy to flow freely, three key knots (or gates) must be opened. The first is the Knot of Brahman, located at the Root Chakra (Muladhara Chakra). The second is the Knot of Vishnu, situated at the Heart Chakra (Anahata Chakra). The third is the Knot of Shiva, found at the Third Eye Point (Ajna Chakra).

So how do you become sensitive to these zones and empower yourself to use them in your practice to awaken the Kundalini? That is where the practice of Bandhas comes in.
