Meditation for the First Chakra

Awaken Your Roots
January 22 & 23, 1991

This meditation is believed to activate and strengthen your Root Chakra (Muladhara Chakra), promoting feelings of stability, security, and connection to the Earth’s grounding energy. The squeezing action strengthens your pelvic floor muscles, which can improve overall health and well-being.

Posture & Mudra:

Sit in Easy Pose (Sukhasana) with a straight spine. Extend your arms comfortably to the sides, with the elbows bent, so your forearms are parallel to your thighs. Then angle your palms toward each other at 60 degrees above parallel . Imagine your thumbs and forefingers as the highest points of the tilted plane of your palms.

Warm-Up Movement:

To get a feel for the meditation’s rhythm, practice this initial movement a few times. Slowly bring your hands closer to each other from the starting position, as you simultaneously squeeze your pelvic floor muscles around the anus (like the first step in applying Root Lock or Mula Bandha). As you touch your hands at the center, release the contraction.

Mantra:

HUMEE HUM, BRAHM HUM.” This meditation uses a specific chanting technique. Keep your tongue relaxed and flat at the bottom of your mouth, not using it to make the sounds. Chanting the mantra with the tongue recessed or held down in your mouth, creates a pressure in your cheekbones.

Suggested recording: Humee Hum by Nirinjan Kaur from the album Musical Affirmations.

Movement:

  • Chant “HUMEE HUM” with the recessed tongue as you bring your hands halfway together and then stop briefly.
  • Then chant “BRAHM HUM” as you bring your hands together to touch in front of your body.
  • As you move your hands, squeeze your pelvic floor muscles (like stopping urination) and maintain the contraction until your hands touch. When you touch, relax the muscles and then return your hands to the starting position.
  • Continue to chant and move in this way.

Eyes/Drishti:

Focus on the Tip of the Nose (Lotus Point).

Duration:

Start by practicing for 11 minutes and gradually extend your practice time up to 31 minutes as you become more comfortable.
