Drishti Kriya

July 22, 1992

This practice is said to be three thousand years old and from the lineage of Guru Gobind Singh. It is said that this kriya is so powerfully life-giving, such that, if perfected, the practitioner can infuse life into anything they look at.

Light enters the system through the eyes; the rest of the body is just an opaque reflector. In this kriya, practice creating an image that goes deeper than you may think. When you can create and hold an image of supreme excellence at will, you can succeed in everything.

1. Lung Vibrating

Posture & Mudra: Sit in Easy Pose (Sukhasana) and bring your hands into Gyan Mudra. Hold the hands to the sides of the shoulders with the palms facing forward with the forearms straight and perpendicular to the ground. The weight of the arms will rest on the elbows, which are against the sides.

Movement & Breath: Sit very still, as any movement will disturb the muscular and glandular systems. Breath powerfully in and out through the O mouth at a moderate pace (this is not Breath of Fire, but slower and more powerful); this is called Vayu Yagna or the breath which vibrates the lungs, and it will open the lungs powerfully and relax you.

Duration: Continue for 2 minutes.

Ending: Inhale deeply and exhale.

Comment: Do not practice this breath longer than specified; it can lead to hyperventilation.

2. Drishti Kriya

Posture & Mudra: Remain in the same posture and mudra as Exercise 1. Sit very still; do not move at all.

Movement & Breath: Long Deep Breathing. Breathe as consciously and slowly as you can.

Eyes/Drishti: Closed and focused on the Tip of the Nose (Ajna Chakra).

Mindful Attention: Try to see the tip of your nose through the closed eyes. Look with your mental eye and concentrate to elevate yourself.

Duration: Continue for 7 minutes.

Ending: Immediately begin Exercise 3.

3. Rose Visualization

Posture & Mudra: Remain in the same posture and mudra as Exercise 2. Sit very still; do not move at all.

Breath: Long Deep Breathing. Breathe as consciously and slowly as you possibly can.

Eyes/Drishti: Closed.

Mindful Attention: Visualize your head as a large rose of the color of your choice. With your nose in the middle, smell the scent of the flower. Breathe the purifying scent of the rose, hold this focus, and do not allow yourself to be distracted. Concentrate strongly.

Duration: Continue for 12 minutes.

Ending: Talk with someone about anything for at least 3 minutes. If you are practicing alone, talk to yourself aloud.

Inhale deeply and suspend your breath for 20 seconds. Exhale.

Repeat this sequence one more time.

Inhale deeply and exhale completely. Hold your breath out for 20 seconds. Inhale and relax.
